Doctor Derek Johnston is a media academic currently working at Queen’s University, Belfast, where he teaches media analysis on the BA Broadcast Production, MA Media and Broadcast Production, and contributes to other courses. He has previously taught at the University of Portsmouth and the University of East Anglia, which is where he also studied his MA and completed his PhD. The PhD thesis was entitled “Genre, Taste and the BBC: The Origins of British Television Science Fiction, 1936-1955”.
Before returning to study, Derek worked in a number of corporate and commercial roles, including providing medical information, conducting financial analysis of airlines, handling internal communications, data entry, customer service and shelf-stacking.
